Common abbreviations discovered so far:
D M _the the gods/shades of the dead (Dis Manibus) DOM
L M--(this is the) place of the monument (locus monumenti)
v, vi--lived (vixit)
a, an, ann--years (annos)
cum quo/qua==with whom
dul, dulc==the sweetest (dulcissimo/ae)
bene merenti well-deserving; merito
h m n h s == This monument will not go to (my non-related) heir (hoc monumentum non heredem sequetur)
h s e == here ___ is placed (hic situs/a est)
sibi et suis == for him-/her-self and their posterity
dies--days
mens: months
h: horae
maritus == husband car, carissimo/ae: greatly beloved
conjugi--to a spouse
L f==son/daughter of Lucius--Luci filio/ae
M f==son/daughter of Marcus--Marci filio/ae
in f p, in fr p=across the front (i.e.. facing the road) ___feet (in fronte _____pedes)
in ag p, in agr p=into the field (i.e. stretching back from the road) ___feet. (in agro ____ pedes)

June 1--we had an intro/discussion about all the places you would expect to encounter Roman writing, then watched this slide show with examples of many of those things

religion, patronal god
affiliation/brotherhood
"loving . . ."
military status/success
political role(s)
person who made the tombstone some kind of saying
